Blink charging does not rest on its laurels!

In December, Blink Charging installed thirty new charging points in the public car parks of Antwerpse Parkings, which will help to double their charging capacity.

Antwerpse Parkings is a local car parking provider, and one of the few purely Belgian players in the Belgian parking market. Founded in 2012, it operates five covered car parks between Central Station and the Scheldt. It manages a total of 2,000 parking spaces in the historic center of Antwerp.

Antwerpse Parkings and Blink Charging have been working together since 2014, when the then Blue Corner (now Blink Charging) installed the first charging stations, including in the car park under Antwerp’s Grote Markt, one of the busiest car parks in the country.

Almost a decade later, the demand for charging has increased sharply. The occupancy rate of the charging points is particularly high in the Grote Markt and Arenberg car parks. But it was also time to expand capacity in Parking Breidel, Brabo and Meir-Opera.

“An electric vehicle hasn’t finished charging by the time the next one is in line. The high demand for charging is of course related to the rapid electrification of the Belgian and Dutch vehicle fleets. In one year alone, the number of electric cars in our country alone has almost doubled,” says Anthony Poschet, Sales Manager at Blink Charging.

Electric vehicle drivers prefer to charge their cars at home, and that will be no different in the future, according to Ronny Lamoen, CEO of Antwerpse Parkings. “For us, it’s more about recharging, but charging stations are a necessary extra service that we have to offer. For example, we welcome many Dutch tourists in our car parks, and for them, recharging is of course essential to get home without stress.”

Blink Charging’s new charging points at Antwerpse Parkings have a standard capacity of 11 kW. An hour of charging equates to a range of about 50 kilometers. For most electric cars, that charging speed is sufficient. The existing fourteen chargers were retired after ten years of service.

The doubling of the charging capacity also means a renewed collaboration between Blink Charging and Antwerpse Parkings. In the coming years, the two companies aim to keep up with demand and install dozens more charging points. The preparatory studies for this have now started.

“The partnership with Blink Charging has been going very well for ten years,” says Ronny Lamoen. “As a parking company, we can hand everything over to Blink Charging, who make the largest investments, have the international know-how and technical knowledge in-house, and also do the installation and all maintenance. As a local player, we should not try to reinvent the wheel. I also see others in the parking market turning to partnerships for all their EV charging needs.”

“We are very pleased with the extension of the partnership, and the trust of a major player such as Antwerpse Parkings,” says Olivier Van Schap, Managing Director at Blink Charging Belgium. “We have only just started the electric transition. In 2023, the number of EVs on Belgian roads doubled and at least the same is expected in 2024. The charging infrastructure in car parks will logically have to follow,” says Olivier Van Schap.
